The Greenways of Girona, now also available as electronic routes

The Consortium of Girona Greenways presents the new system of electronic routes created at the greenways of Girona; a GPS guiding system that shows the heritage of the greenways located between Ripoll and Sant Feliu de Guíxols (115 km) in a multimedia way.

The new application that has been developed means that a mobile phone with GPS can be used as a guiding device to orientate the user over digital mapping. The application informs the user about different points of interest near the itinerary they are following. These are interactive itineraries whereby the visitor interacts with the environment not by way of the traditional system of signs and boards but, rather, with an electronic portable device; the mobile phone and the PDA.

The e-routes are composed of three main itineraries which take in the Ripoll-Olot, Olot-Bescanó and Bescanó-Sant Feliu de Guíxols routes, and twenty two secondary ones. The user will be accompanied by Jep, a virtual character who guides the visitors through different multimedia display panels and presents the natural and cultural elements that can be found on route. Furthermore, a description of the route, its duration, level and other points of interest can be found on the display panel.

E-routes provide added value to the practice of hiking and bike touring as they also encourage low intensity sport and leisure activities combined with exploring the surrounding environment.

Downloading or rental of devices

These tracks can be downloaded at the Greenways of Girona website, www.viesverdes.org, or PDA devices can be rented at information points along the route, specifically the municipalities of Ripoll, Olot, Girona and Sant Feliu de Guíxols.

The versions for Windows Mobile, BlackBerry and Android are available on the website. Users can select the guide in Catalan, Spanish, English or French.
