Key Features
- Comprehensive Route Visualization: Users can explore over 200 kilometers of greenways, including the Pirinexus route and numerous cycling paths and complementary routes.
- Custom Route Planning: The planner allows users to create and save personalized routes, whether for a single day or multiple stages.
- Real-Time Updates: The tool is self-managing, enabling Consortium technicians to update information, add new routes, tourist services, points of interest, and provide alerts or news.
- User-Friendly Interface: Developed using a GIS data management system, the planner offers an intuitive cartographic viewer, available in four languages and optimized for mobile devices.
According to Quim Roca, Deputy of the Girona Provincial Council and Delegate President of the Consortium, the initiative addresses the need to centralize all relevant information in one platform, providing users with everything they need to plan their personalized route. The development of the planner, which began in the second half of 2023, represents an investment of €32,948.30, fully funded by the NextGeneration EU funds.

Among the results of the project in the section corresponding to the counties of Girona is the creation of the new Pirinexus Litoral route, 45 kilometres of new cycle path between Figueres and Vilajuïga, a generally flat track with gentle inclines that has public transport connections to the cycle paths of French Catalonia. This work connects a new sustainable mobility segment in Alt Empordà with the Pirinexus route and the European EuroVelo 8 route, and improves services for users with new bicycle parking facilities, chargers and apps that provide more information on bus and train connections.
The consortium has been involved in adapting and constructing different sections of urban cycle lanes in Figueres, Castelló d’Empúries and Roses; upgrading existing paths in Figueres and Vilajuïga; acquiring and subsequently installing panels and municipal and directional signage, as well as bicycle chargers and parking facilities.
Eduard Llorà, Member of the Diputació de Girona and Executive Chairman of the Consorci de les Vies Verdes, remarked: “This new European project has made it possible to develop a coastal alternative along the cross-border section between Figueres and Perpignan, both of which are very busy areas during the tourist season. We must continue to work on this international cooperation, which is essential.”
The vice-president of the Communauta Urbaine Perpignan Méditerranée, Arnelle Revel, stressed: “Through this project we are committed to developing the EuroVelo 8 cycling route, the Mediterranean route”, and he added: “The uniqueness of our route lies in being able to enjoy the river in an environmentally friendly setting with views of Canigó.”
Xavier Amiel, Councillor for Urban Planning and Mobility in the Ajuntament de Figueres, indicated: “We want to underline our commitment to making Figueres, a tourist destination, compatible with the ever-increasing use of bicycles.”
The Chairman of the Consell Comarcal de l’Alt Empordà, Sònia Martínez, noted that “The organisation has a work plan based on sustainability and cooperation”, and she cited the BiciTransCat project as an example of these strategies. “When institutions cooperate with one another, ambitious projects like this can be accomplished”, she added.
Finally, the Vice-President of the Conseil Départemental des Pyrénées-Orientales, Jean Roque, declared: “Today we are proud of the work we have done with our partners, as it facilitates cycling and cross-border public transport for users. These projects complement a sustainable mobility offer.” He added that, in his area, “We have expanded the digital data ecosystem related to data standardisation for the Geovelo route calculation algorithm.”
The total budget allocated for the project is around 4.5 million euros, 65% of which is co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) through the Interreg-POCTEFA programme, 25% by the Diputació de Girona with respect to the Catalan partners, and 10% is self-funded.

The work has been carried out entirely in the municipality of Amer but, due to its proximity, Cellera de Ter also benefits from it. To widen the hard shoulder, the water has been channelled under the concreted road surface and it has been necessary to cut back and stabilise the hillside with a triple-twist mesh to prevent rocks, stones and sand from falling onto the greenway. To ensure separation from the road, which is achieved using the double wave barrier of the road itself, and to improve the safety of users, the metal edges have been covered with plastic protectors.
The containment of the rock slope has been made possible mainly with triple twisted metal mesh, reinforced in some sections with geogrid, a structure with thicker plastic filaments, which prevents stones and sand from falling onto the greenway and allows vegetation to grow.
Taking advantage of the work, the entire area of car park next to the river has been tidied up, creating a section of cycle lane that did not exist previously and signposting the C-152A level crossing. The work in El Pasteral has been carried out in two phases: the first, in June 2020, for the sum of 131,233.80 euros; and the second, completed in November, for total of 37,394.54 euros.
Extraordinary repairs on greenways due to the effects of storm Gloria
This work marks the end of the extraordinary repairs that the Consorci de les Vies Verdes de Girona had to carry out due to the flooding caused by storm Gloria between 21 and 23 January, 2020, as well as the overflowing of the River Ter on January 24. Together, the actions cost 1,150,000 euros, which was entirely paid for by the Diputació de Girona. The main eimpact was focused on the Carrilet Route, specifically between Amer, La Cellera de Ter, and Anglès. Rebuilding the bridge at Anglès – La Cellera de Ter, which collapsed due to the breakage of a pillar, cost 550,000 euros, and rebuilding the roadbed to El Pasteral, which was washed away by the floods, cost almost 169,000 euros.

The app is available in Catalan, Spanish, English and French and has several different sections: information on each of the Secrets, the itinerary and the associated points of interest; a map where the user can check their location and see the routes corresponding to the Secrets and the greenways; information on the heritage related to the historical passage of the railways along the greenways; and four games for discovering the Secrets of the Greenways. The games on offer will delight users of all ages. In some cases, you can start playing even before you visit the routes.
As you progress through the app, you mark the points of interest you have visited and those you have yet to visit. In addition, as you visit sites and solve challenges through the games, you earn points that allow you to enter a score ranking and see where you stand in relation to other users.
Both the app and the Secrets are a living project, which is constantly growing, with the aim of introducing new routes to be discovered.
The Greenways Secrets project has been carried out as part of PECT Costa Brava Pirineu de Girona: “Nature, culture and intelligence in a network”, a project co-financed by the EU’s European Regional Development Fund, within the framework of the RIS3CAT and the ERDF Operational Programme for Catalonia 2014-2020, as well as by Diputació de Girona.
