The Diputació de Girona contributes more than half a million euros to the European «BiciTransCat» project

The project «Development of new bikeable itineraries and multimodal border links for promoting sustainable mobility», known by the acronym BiciTransCat EFA156/16, is financed with European INTERREG-POCTEFA (FEDER) funds, up to 65%. The total budget is 4,689,269.25 euros, the financing from FEDER is 3,045,025.01 euros, and it includes the participation of the Girona Greenways Consortium, the Figueres City Council, the Alt Empordà County Council, the Conseil Départamentale des Pyrénées-Orientales, the Communauté Urbaine Perpignan Méditerranée and the Diputació de Girona as an associated entity.

The goal of the project is to link the tourist destinations in the Girona region with the French Pyrénées-Orientales department through a bikeable network that is interconnected with different types of public transportation. This border network is located along the northeast part of the Girona region, specifically in Alt Empordà and the coast of the French part of Catalonia (Southern France). «BiciTransCat» is the new coastal axis project along the EuroVelo 8 and the Pirinexus bicycle routes, and it is focused on a sustainable tourism model. Thanks to the new infrastructure, it will help encourage using sustainable mobility routes while also encouraging active tourism and nature in the area.

A new website: www.bicitranscat.cat

The Girona Greenways Consortium has recently launched the website www.bicitranscat.cat, a site in four languages (Catalan, Spanish, French, and English) in which they explain the European POCTEFA partnership project to develop a bikeable route along the border. The website also shows the official documents and offers safety and mobility advice, news related to the development of the work, and a link to all the participating entities.
